Eye gaze patterns and functional brain responses during emotional face processing in adolescents with conduct disorder

چکیده

Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by severe aggressive and antisocial behavior. Initial evidence suggests neural deficits aberrant eye gaze pattern during emotion processing in CD; both concepts, however, have not yet been studied simultaneously. The present study assessed the functional brain correlates of emotional face with without consideration concurrent behavior adolescents CD compared to typically developing (TD) adolescents. 58 (23CD/35TD; average age = 16 years/range 14–19 years) underwent an implicit task. Neuroimaging analyses were conducted for a priori-defined regions interest (insula, amygdala, medial orbitofrontal cortex) using full-factorial design assessing main effects (neutral, anger, fear), group interaction thereof (cluster-level, p < .05 FWE-corrected) (i.e., time spent on region). Adolescents showed significant hypo-activations right anterior insula TD adolescents, independent presented. In-scanner eye-tracking data revealed that significantly less eye, but mouth region. Correcting reduced differences previously observed insula. Atypical activation may partly be explained attentional mechanisms allocation eyes, presented). An increased understanding mechanism causal ultimately aid development personalized intervention programs.

Eye-tracking, autonomic, and electrophysiological correlates of emotional face processing in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty with social-emotional cues. This study examined the neural, behavioral, and autonomic correlates of emotional face processing in adolescents with ASD and typical development (TD) using eye-tracking and event-related potentials (ERPs) across two different paradigms. Scanning of faces was similar across groups in the first task...

Eye gaze during face processing in children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVE The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic syndrome with high risk for the development of psychiatric disorder. There is interest in identifying reliable markers for measuring and monitoring socio-emotional impairments in 22q11DS during development. The current study investigated eye gaze as a potential marker during a face-processing task in children and young adolesce...

Motor, emotional, and cognitive empathy in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and conduct disorder.

It is unclear which aspects of empathy are shared and which are uniquely affected in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and conduct disorder (CD) as are the neurobiological correlates of these empathy impairments. The aim of this systematic review is to describe the overlap and specificity of motor, emotional, and cognitive aspects of empathy in children and adolescents with ASD or CD. Motor and co...

Age-related differences in brain activation during emotional face processing.

Advancing age is associated with significant declines on neurobehavioral tasks that demand substantial mental effort. Functional imaging studies of mental abilities indicate that older adults faced with cognitive challenges tend to activate more regions, particularly frontal, than their younger counterparts, and that this recruitment of additional regions may reflect an attempt to compensate fo...

Atypical empathic responses in adolescents with aggressive conduct disorder: a functional MRI investigation.

Because youth with aggressive conduct disorder (CD) often inflict pain on others, it is important to determine if they exhibit atypical empathic responses to viewing others in pain. In this initial functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, eight adolescents with aggressive CD and eight matched controls with no CD symptoms were scanned while watching animated visual stimuli depicting o...
